About Team NEON
to Help the environment by planting rain gardens and educating the public about environmental issues
Team Neon is made up of students determined to educate and demonstrate the benefits of using rain gardens and growing Missouri native plants. To accomplish this we will send rain garden kits full of seeds to elementary and middle schools across the state, and offer lesson plans and activities to teachers.
Rain Gardens have long been praised for their filtering abilities; they can benefit a community by reducing water runoff, land erosion, and improving pollination opportunities for native plant species. Also, most plants common in a rain garden have roots that die off each year, leaving behind organic matter and channels throughout the soil matrix creating widespread water flow beneath the soil.
By reintroducing this simple technology, we are helping
teach students to understand and relay concepts and to
respect the natural environment around them.
Our Procedure:
First we planted a native Missouri prairie at our school to establish a future seed nurseryThen we collected seeds from our previously established rain gardens and prairieWe then made plans for a typical rain garden that included 7 different seedsFinally we packaged the seeds and distributed them to elementary schools and teachers across the stateWednesday, January 20th!
